The Gates belt on the Heavy 10 is about 1 1/8" wide and is a much heavier duty belt. As a result, the joint is stiffer than on the 9A. Still, when I tighten up on the tension it makes very little noise as it travels over the pulleys.

However the 1" motor pulley size is not realistic. 1-3/4" is about the smallest that will work for v-belts and that will not transmitt power efficiently because the belt has to bend around such a small pulley. If you use the multi-rib belts, they will bend around a smaller radius but step pulleys are difficult to find for them.

Having made the past mistake of buying a Craftsman 109, I decided to sell the 109 and buy a older Southbend lathe of higher quality. The old number for the V-belt is Glimer 3345 as found in the 1964 manual. In the same manual the timing belt is identified as E2 Construction Spec TB 4B. It's easier to just purchase the replacement belts for your step pulley mill from from a vendor Although it is called the 'Timing Belt' it is really the Lo Speed/Back Gear drive belt. John

Not sure if it was to replace the belt or to work on the draw bar. My belt snapped when I was taking a pretty heavy face cut. Their initial tension settings seemed loose after I fired it up. I re-tensioned to 35lbs after 2 cycles and it sounded a lot better.

I stopped by tonight at the local auto parts store and bought a new serpentine belt to put on my SB9. The old belt is OLD, more than 25 years. I have been putting this off for a long time but the old belt is slipping too much. I needed a belt one inch wide or slightly less. A six rib serpentine belt happens to be 7/8" wide. Perfect.
