One of the most commonly used methods is the Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI). HGI for coal is determined by grinding 50 g of sample in a ball and ring type mill for 60 revolutions, after which the product is sieved through a 200 mesh sieve (75 micron screen) (Speight, 1994). The coal fines are collected and the amount of coal lower than a specified size is noted and converted into a Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) value. Generally the resulting HGI Index values fall in between 30 (indicating higher opposition to pulverization) and 100 (indicating lesser resistance).
